Bedsit by Prudence Flint

A beautiful series of oil paintings by the Australian Prudence Flint with the “Bedsit” series exploring woman expressions in certain situations while also playing with body proportions. “I imagine these women focusing and thinking. Facial expressions can really dominate a painting. I prefer a more ambiguous reading so the painting itself has room to become the expression. I’m often not sure what it is I want the figure to be feeling. I need to surrender and find it within the painting. We are used to seeing people depicted smiling or scowling in advertisements where ambiguity isn’t going to sell anything.

Prudence Flint is a Melbourne based artist. She has held solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Hobart and has exhibited in major state and regional galleries. She is a seventh-time finalist in the Archibald Prize. She won the Len Fox Painting Award (2016), the Portia Geach Memorial Award (2010), and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2004). Her work is held in the collections of the City of Port Phillip, Artbank, BHP Billiton, City of Gold Coast, University of Wollongong, Castlemaine Art Museum, and in numerous private collections.
